how to prevent wrinkles

One of the best ways for dealing with wrinkles is prevention.  As we get older and age our skin does the same, but there are some easy tips that one can follow to help keep their skin looking young and radiant for years to come.

1.  Bright Colors Are Your Friends - While daily servings of fruits and vegetables are key to a healthy and balanced diet, pay particular attention to those bright fruits.  The berries (blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, acai berry), pomegranates, watermelon etc.  The bright color of a fruit is an indicator of a high volume of antioxidants - one of your #1 allies in your battle against wrinkles.

2.  Drink Up!  No, we don’t mean wine (sorry!), but water.  There is nothing that helps keep your skin looking great more than water.  Drinking plenty helps continuously flush your system of the toxins you encounter in day to day life and also helps to keep your skin moist and plump - which reduces the appearance of wrinkles.  Drinking 10 glasses + of water daily not only helps your skin, but your entire body, and is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to keep your skin looking great!

3.  Use a Good Moisturizer - When it comes to face creams, all are not created equal.  Many of the higher end, name brand moisturizers and creams are nothing more than a fancy bottle and good marketing.  Look for a face cream that is packed with antioxidants and natural ingredients.  Coenzyme Q10 is a must, as well as a mix of different peptides (really the newest thing in skin care).  Our favorite line that utilizes all of these, as well as many other natural & effective ingredients is Mad Hippie Skin Care (http://www.madhippie.com).

4.  Avoid the Sun - Yes, it is true that you need some sun in your daily life to produce Vitamin D, however, limiting your exposure to the sun’s harmful ultra violet rays is vital to keeping your skin looking great.  While everyone loves a suntan, understand that a sun tan is actually your skin’s natural defense against UV rays.  Although the term “a healthy tan” was once popular, we now know that a suntan is actually damaging and not really healthy.   If you must be out in the sun, try to avoid the hours when the UV rays are the most intense between 10am-2pm, wear protective clothing (long sleeves, hats etc.) and wear sunscreen.  Many people do not realize that sunscreen, like most things, breaks down after application due to exposure to UV rays, and hence must be reapplied every 1.5 - 2 hours (even more if swimming or sweating).  If you desperately want a tan try a sunless tanner - your skin will thank you for it in the years to come.

5.  Don’t Smoke! As we all know, smoking is terrible for your overall health and its effects will ultimately be exhibited outwardly through your skin. There is also nothing that works to break down the collagen in your face quicker than cigarette smoke.  If you currently smoke - quit, and if you do not - definitely don’t start!  Also, try to avoid smoky bars and lounges (which is becoming easier with all the smoking bans), as second hand smoke appears to have almost as many negative side effects as actually smoking yourself.

6. Watch the Booze - While the occasional drink is not harmful for your skin or health (and many studies show in fact that a drink a day can be positive for your overall health), binge drinking and heavy drinking can leave its mark on your face.  Make sure when you are going to be drinking, to drink lots of water in between alcoholic drinks.  It will help you keep your body moisturized, and flush the alcohol through your system (not to mention prevent a hangover).

7.  Sleep on Your Back - While this one is a little more controversial, some studies (and handfuls of women we have talked to) appear to back the claim.  There are something called sleep wrinkles, which are the wrinkles that can be formed on your face from having your face pressed tightly against your pillow.  Sleep wrinkles are different than smile lines and crows feet in that they occur in different places, and follow a different pattern.  Some also argue that by sleeping on your back you avoid some of the pulling and stretching of your facial skin which can lead to sagging skin in your later years.

8.  Exercise - Keep active and get plenty of exercise.  Daily exercise of at least 20 minutes daily will help keep your body and skin looking healthy and youthful.  Again, the look of the skin is often little more than an outward expression of a body’s health.  Keep your body healthy and strong and your skin will look great!

9.  Plenty of Rest - Make sure you sleep plenty and are fully rested.  Running on empty for long periods of time can run down your body, and lead to more vulnerability to all afflictions.  It will also help to prevent bags under the eyes, and a “tired” look that makes us all look older.

10.  Be Happy & Enjoy Yourself - Studies show that happier people are healthier, and this of course also applies to your skin.  Do things you enjoy, lead the life you want, and guaranteed you will see a reflection of your positive lifestyle and actions in the way you look & feel.
